Ash-Ash je malý kluk z městečka Pallet Town, jehož největším snem je stát se nejlepším trenérem Pokémonů všech dob. Má na svůj věk nevšední talent připlétat se do různých dobrodružství, za kterých mu často pomáhají jeho Pokémoni i jeho přátelé. Jeho vztah k Pokémonům nelze popsat jinak, než jako vratkou rovnováhu mezi přáními Pokémonů, a příkazy jejich trenéra...
Brock-Brock je odvážným trenérem pokémonního stadionu v Pewter City. Jeho specialitou jsou kamenní Pokémoni, a je první vážnější překážkou na Ashově cestě za jeho cílem. Ash od něj získá Rock Badge, přestože ho vlastně neporazí. Brock má právo doporučovat nové trenéry do oficiálního sdružení trenérů - Pokémonové Ligy.
Gary-Gary je vnukem profesora Oaka, a dlouholetým Ashovým rivalem. Nejlepší zábavu pro něj představuje ponižovat Ashe kdykoliv ho potká. A potkává ho opravdu často, a že jejich setkání většinou neskončí jinak než soubojem jejich Pokémonů, to ani není třeba nijak zdůrazňovat. Aby Ash dosáhl svého vysněného cíle, bude muset nakonec Garyho porazit i na Indigo Plateau.
Misty- Nenech se zmást jejím roztomilým vzhledem - Misty je výborná trenérka s množstvím silných vodních Pokémonů. Ostatně je to jedna z trenérek stadionu v Celurean City. Pokud ji Ash dokáže porazit, získá odměnou Cascade Badge.
Profesor Oak- Profesor Oak je uznávaným pokémonním vědcem, žijícím v Pallet Town. Právě on uvede Ashe mezi trenéry Pokémonů, a dokonce mu jeho prvního věnuje. Oak zasvětil studiu Pokémonů celý svůj život, a má proto rozsáhlé znalosti o všem, co Ashe zajímá. Bohužel ten se toho ale od profesora mnoho naučit nestačí, jeho cesta do Pokémonové Ligy ho zavede daleko od domova...
Rakeťáci- Společnost zlých trenérů Pokémonů, kteří mají jediný cíl - ovládnout všechny Pokémony, a hned potom ovládnout celý svět. Jesse a James jsou významní členové této skupiny, a spolu se svým mluvícím Pokémonem Meowthem se trvale pokoušejí zastavit Ashe, a především chytit jeho Pikachu.
